Hello Golfers,

Welcome to this week's newsletter bringing you a recap of last weekend's East of Scotland Championship, a look ahead to the Club Championships, and Saturday Night's menu looks superb, so take a look at that too. Enjoy the read.

East of Scotland Championship

Last weekend saw the annual East of Scotland Amateur Strokeplay Championship take place. The format - as always – was 36 holes Saturday with the top 40 and ties playing a further 36 on the Sunday. Saturday morning started well, a warm morning with a very light breeze that picked up as the day progressed.

The first few groups of the afternoon players completed their rounds, but with a massive change to the forecast bringing thunder, lightning and torrential rain, play was suspended. Play resumed again, but it wasn’t to be - Round 2 cancelled and the tournament reduced to 54 holes.

With Lundie players featuring all looked promising but with strong winds creating tough conditions it made for a difficult day on the links.

At the end of the 54 holes two players finished on -3 creating a sudden death playoff that progressed to five extra holes to find the winner!

Coming out victorious was Bruntsfield’s, Stuart McLaren pipping last year’s winner Matthew Clark with James White, the local man, taking 3rd place and lifting the trophy for best Fife Player.

Club Championship

This weekend sees the qualifying rounds of our 2019 club championships with the Silver Medal 36 hole qualifier taking place on Saturday and the Gold Medal 18 hole qualifier Sunday. The matchplay ties will take place next week so please be sure to check the tee sheet as the first tee will be closed for a period most evenings!

Wear the badge with pride

A classic piece of golfing attire is the club crested shirt, which is something we're able to offer you thanks to our friends at Glenmuir.

They've been creating stylish golf clothing since 1891 and specialise in the art of cresting; so much so that the European Ryder Cup team used them for every event between 1987 and 2014.

Well, their current range is an excellent combination of traditional designs with subtle detailing for that added bit of flair - like the hexagonal print detail on the Haddington's chest (fuchsia polo here).

Are you focusing on the wrong thing?

As soon as the ball has left the putter face, we know whether it’s going to be good or not. It’s like a sixth sense, right? But what constitutes a good putt? Many golfers let the final outcome decide this – i.e. whether the ball ends up in the hole or not – but that is arguably well out of our control. So, perhaps it's time to refocus on what we can control?

There are only two things we can really control when it comes to putting. The first is starting the ball on the correct line. Take Tiger Woods for example; the 15-time major winner focuses on a blade of grass he wants the ball to roll over immediately in front of him, which brings the intended target much closer to impact.

The second is getting the ball rolling correctly, which means imparting top spin as quickly as possible after impact rather than having it jumping and skidding in the air.

One way to control our putting is by utilising the technology in Odyssey’s stunning Strokelab putters.
