East Of Scotland Open Amateur Strokeplay 2017
As you're all aware from previous newsletters, as well as the last forty four years, last weekend saw the annual East Of Scotland tournament take place here at the club and it didn't disappoint! With an early start on Saturday morning the first tee shot was hit at 7am, with calm mild conditions the course was there for the taking and the early birds on Saturday, without a doubt, had a chance to storm ahead before the stronger winds forecasted blew in!
By mid-morning Saturday the wind had picked up and by eleven it was getting tough! Scoring was still good and on a tough fiery course, at the mid-way point, three Lundie men were right in the hunt! (Andrew Davidson, James White and Greg Wishart)
Sunday again saw a blustery day and with strong winds it was definitely a day to sort the men out from the boys!!
Local man White sored to the top of the pack with in incredible morning round of 65 to be joint leader on -8 with one round to go and, being in the penultimate group, all was set for a great finale! Alas the fight to the end was not to be with Steven Stewart, the half way leader, making a school boy error in round three by signing for the wrong score and an early bath was taken! The pressure was off slightly; however James needed to keep a strong head and, with home advantage on his side, he held off Stuart Easton to win, surprisingly enough, his first East having been so close on previous occasions.
The course as always was fantastic, the buzz around the club especially Sunday was great and what a sight to see a packed clubhouse late Sunday for the presentation! A credit to the club and the junior helpers and scorers and one to be very proud of!!
Lombard Trophy
Monday saw myself and Keith Renton head to Craigielaw for The Lombard Trophy, an early tee time saw us leave at 5.30am on what was a tough yet mild day! The seed was set on hole one after driving the green yet barely managing a par! A new course for me and one I thoroughly enjoyed, very exposed with up turned saucer like greens made our approach shots pretty challenging! We tried, but alas it wasn't to be! 66 was the best of the day and Keith and I finished on 72 - six back! Safe to say that spending the weekend on our putting green here at the club turned out to be a bad move! The greens on the far side of the water were good but not Lundie good!
A few bargains on putters this week I think, I'll be sure to add myself to Stewarts next putting clinic as, with six three putts in the first twelve holes, it proved a challenging day on the greens, however tee to green was great and Keith as usual was very steady. There's always next time!
It's Finally Here!
This weekend sees the start of Club Championship week, with The Silver Medal 36 hole qualifier scheduled for Saturday and The Bronze Medal qualifier Sunday, please be aware that there will be no course availability Saturday and very limited until late Sunday afternoon as well as the evening ties due to take place over the following week. Tee closures are scheduled for 5pm most days that week to allow for the match play rounds, please check your diary or the online system to see the blocked areas to enable Finals Day on Sunday 16th.
Club Stewards
Our new club stewards Gary and Elaine Woodward are scheduled to start on Monday, as I type the removal vans are moving them in and it shouldn't take long for them to get their feet under the table! Excuse the pun!
I'm sure you'll join me in thanking Gemma Clunie for all her hard work of recent months, ensuring everyone was fed! What a fantastic job she has done and I'm sure she won't be too far away!
